With the first pick in the 2013 NFL draft

Nobody Likes a Jerk selects...he'll it doesn't really matter who I selected. He's either going to be labeled a savoir or a washout depending on how the rest of the team plays behind him.

I took my one and only break from baseball season this weekend to catch a little of the NFL draft. It didn't hurt that the Mets had an awful series against the Phillies, so that freed up my schedule a bit. It also didn't hurt that the Jets had two picks in the first 15.

The draft used to be appointment viewing with Chris Burman and Mel Kipper going at it for 8 hours on a Saturday afternoon. Depending on which side of the coin you're on, that has now been reduced to 2 hours on Thursday night, 2 hours on Friday night, and some time on Saturday where no one is really watching unless you have a Geno Smith or Brady Quinn type in the Green Room beyond the first round.

Speaking of Mr. Smith, those Jets drafted him in the 2nd round and I'm happy. He's a very athletic quarterback who has a strong arm and big legs. He kind of reminds me of Tim Tebow only with out the Christ complex and with an actual working arm. Mr. Tebow was released this morning by the team which brings the number of QB's on the roster down to a manageable 5 (there's a lot of sarcasm here). Actually if the team is really interested in teaching Smith and grooming him to be the QB of the future then put him down as the 3rd on the depth chart behind starter Mark Sanchez and back up David Gerrard and let him hold the clipboard this season and learn. We are not going anywhere and can put up with another season of Sanchez.

But all this talk of players and strategy takes me off the point I was trying to make here today. Did you watch the draft? Did you see the tables where each team's staff was huddled around just before making each pick? Did you notice something out of place on those tables? If you said "A Bottle of Gatorade", you would be correct!

One of the NFL's biggest sponsors made sure to have their products placed in a high-eyeball area during the draft. While that's great for the world of product placement, does anybody care that a sports drink was being featured in an environment where there were more neck ties than score ties?

The Draft has it's fair share of corporate sponsors this year. Ad Age points out that among them are Visa, Verizon, and other companies that don't even have V's in their names. (http://adage.com/article/news/nfl-turned-draft-mcrib-sporting-events/241141/) But why was Gatorade the only one featured up on the tables? Did other companies just not give as much? What a great tie-in Visa could have had if each team went up to congratulate their newest acquisition and handed him a pre-paid Visa card with his signing bonus already loaded up!

I get that this is a prime time event with lots of the coveted "Males 24-40" demographic tuning in but I don't think that calls for this much of an insult to "our" collective intelligence. Do you think we don't know what Gatorade is? We've grown up with the "Be Like Mike" campaign and the 1986 Giants starting the Gatorade showers. We get it. What we don't get is why?  When I'm in the office and the pressure is on. Do you know what I reach for? If you said a big bottle of lemon-lime G2, you'd be wrong....coincidentally if you said whiskey, you'd be right!

That's it! The 2014 NFL draft brought to you by Jack Daniels and Lazy Boy!

STOP! I Can’t Eat Another Bite.

Ok maybe one more.

And another

Oh and over there they have brisket

UGH...this is how the night ended. Both the wife and I in a hot, sweaty car wishing nothing more then to not have to make the 30 min drive home. I guess we were also wishing for a stomach pump in the near future. But that’s the way the cookie crumbles (oh no not more bad food references) when you attend Washingtonian Magazine’s “Best of Washington” party last night at the National Building Museum.

The night started out with high hopes. We posed for pictures at both the Cadillac and the Washingtonian booths along the red carpet entry way although I haven’t seen any posted yet (of us anyway...oh sure put the famous people up there!). But once we stepped into the building all hell broke loose.

For those of you who don’t know I have ADD. Oh sure it’s not diagnosed but I have it....trust me! This event features over 50 of the area’s best restaurants all handing out free food plus free beer and wine all night. Put those together and you get Me running around trying everything, asking the wife every five seconds if she wants something to drink, and basically having a mental meltdown worse then when I got to Vegas for the first time.

Now that that’s done, let’s get on with some of the highlights and low lights of the night.

BEST/FAVORITE Dishes:
Central Michel Richard’s: Mini corned beef sandwiches were the first thing we tried and one of the best.

Dino:
Mussels with a light herb sauce. Their main offering of Octopus was way over-salted!

Commonwealth Gastropub: Brisket on a crustini. Not quite my Mother’s brisket but still damn good. And that’s saying something since I was already set to vomit!

Bourbon Steak:
steak slices. Duh...actually they were very good from the new steakhouse at the Four Seasons, DC

1789 Restaurant:
Fluke (fish) in cucumber pickling juices. Let’s put it this way....the wife ate cooked fish!!! Their chocolate cookies were also the only item we “double-dipped” on all night

MOST CREATIVE use of PBR:
Matchbox: taking a can of PBR, salting the top, opening it and then filling the “rim” with tequila and finishing it with a lime. Trailer-trash-tastic but damn good!

LEAST FAVORITE Dishes:

Jackie’s: Corn and beet salad. Sure it was locally grown but it still didn’t taste good.

The Majestic:
some sort of hot dog or sausage in a puff pastry. The meat had no taste and the bun was neither puffed or pastry!

Kaz Bistro:
Mexican Chicken Salad roll. In perhaps the surprise of the night I didn’t care for DC’s top sushi shop’s offerings. I know they probably didn’t have the facilities to serve raw fish but this just wasn’t good. I can get chicken salad in a roll up anytime I want at home.

I’m going home to detox. Nothing but salad for the rest of the week!

An Extra Slice, The Air Card, and Happy Hour

It’s not that I need an extra slice of pizza or even that I asked for it. Quite the opposite I only really wanted one (plus the cup of soup). The second piece they put in my takeout box was a nice surprise but it really threw off my entire lunch plan. So instead of warming up with the soup (I left my jacket at the office) and then following through with the tagny-ness of the sauce on the pizza, I had a small sip of the soup and then chased it with two oily slices. I guess I shouldn’t complain, I mean it IS free food and what would happen to this world if I passed up free food. It would be kind of like turning a real-life donkey wheel!

I’m also ticked at Verizon’s wireless access software. I set it up on my work computer last month for a new “air card” that we were given for internet access when we’re off at training courses or other events we host out of office. It worked great and I was able to get a lot of work done while the classes were going on. The other day someone I know (JB) told me about “tethering” my BlackBerry using the same software. I tried it and very cool...it worked. It’s quite a bit slower then the air card but a great “back up” in case I don’t have the card with me. However when I tried to change back to using the card, the computer all of the sudden can’t find it. How is it that Verizon sets up this software so you can only have one device on it? Wouldn’t it naturally make sense to have several devices installable and then just choose the one that best suits your needs? I know this is ticky tacky because after all, I was able to get internet access but it was really slow.

Thanks go to Zack for setting up an AV-Alumni Happy Hour yesterday at the Big Hunt. I had a great time and it was real cool getting to see some of my old coworkers. The bartender however was a bit of a prick and I don’t really understand how my two beers added up to almost $10 during happy hour but again I’m splitting hairs here. The beers were cool though as I started with Bad Ass Amber and then went to Arrogant Bastard. It occurred to me that these names could all be taken as insults when shouted to the bartender. That might explain the high bill.

Can You SEE Me Now?

Forget what I was going to write about today. I just got my daily dose of YouTube and found these really kick ass viral videos from (as best as I can guess) Verizon Wireless that feature the “Can you hear me now?” Guy (Paul Marcarelli). See the posts below and enjoy!
